In 1638, the wealthy Jewish trader Isaak Jakubowicz received permission to build a synagogue from the Polish King Władysław IV Vasa. This was completed in 1644. It has been repeatedly rebuilt over the years. During the German occupation of Poland in World War II, the building was devastated and the Bima was also completely destroyed.
After the war the interior was partially restored; In 1981 there was again damage caused by a fire. In 1989 the synagogue was returned to the Jewish community; After further restorations, it now serves as both a place of worship and a museum.
